On the night of January 17, 2000, Sckeena Marbury, sister Lakeisha Wilson-Bey, and six other women killed Tomika Blackwell. Based on the facts as presented in the trial, it can be concluded that the motive for this murder was revenge. Although it has its limitations, Sykes and Matzas neutralization theory best explains why this crime was committed.
Since the sixteenth century, theorists have been trying to explain the origins of crime and criminals. Theories, ranging from Beccarias rational choice to Marxs social conflict have attempted to, and in many ways been successful, in answering the question of why people commit certain crimes. However, none has, or ever will, be able to fully explain or predict crime. These theories are very useful in accounting for a specific type of crime, or a specific crime, such as the one described below.
On Friday, April 6, 2001, Sckeena Marbury was sentenced to at least 36 years in prison for the murder of Tomika Blackwell. Her sister, Lakeisha Wilson-Bey, was also sentenced, earlier this year, to 36 years to life in prison for her role in
