A Dream Deferred A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes  What happens to a dream deferred' Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun' Or fester like a sore-- And then run' Does it stink like rotten meat' Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet' Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode' The play “Raisin in the Sun” follows a black family living in the ghetto in the late 1950’s. Throughout the play the Youngers go through trying times when they gain money, lose money, and become closer as a family. In the play there are many dreams, some are fulfilled, and some deferred. The poem on which the title was based relates to the play in many ways. In the first line it asks the question does a dream deferred dry up like a raisin in the sun, is really suggesting, do you forget about it so it dries up. This can be associated with Mamma and Mr.Younger’s dream to move out of their apartment. Although they only planned on living in the apartment for one year, they lived there for over thirty-nine years. Because they obviously did not have enough money to move into a house, they forgot all about dream, deferred, play, line, sun, raisin, move, money, out, because, asks, while, sugar, stink, stated, runs, really, poem, over, one, off, load, living, lines, important, heavy, going, ghetto, family, explode, dry, apartment, always, about, youngers
