Marriage In America In, Marriage In America: A Report to the Nation, the council delivers an argument which depicts their main concern; the concern for children. This leads them to focus on family life in America. They believe that the best environment is the two-parent family household. “It is the place where children gain the identity, discipline, and moral education that are essential to their full individual developments” (Council, 2). However, in today’s society one can see that families aren’t exactly like that. There are cohabitating couples, non-marital childbearing, high rates of divorce, and single-parent households. The council’s goal for the next generation is to increase the proportion of children who grow up with 2 married parents; and shift back to a culture of marriage rather than a culture of divorce. In order to reverse the current deterioration of child well being in our society and to strengthen marriage, the council proposes four goals, briefly described. Firstly, to reclaim the ideal of marriage permanence. Secondly, to promote the necessity of a father and indicate the high divorce rates.
