It is up to the individual to try to prevent rape from happening by being aware of personal safety, attending classes, and limiting alcohol consumption. “One out of every four college women is attacked by a rapist before she graduates; one in seven will be raped” (Bender 67). A seventeen-year-old freshman attended a “Little Sister” rush party with two of her roommates and was raped. A fraternity brother offered her a ride home since her roommates left earlier in the night. While waiting to leave, other fraternity brothers wanted her to go into a room so they could discuss “Little Sister” matters. The fraternity brothers told her, in order for her to become a little sister, she must have sex with a fraternity brother. Each of the three brothers who were there had sex with her while she refused (Pritchard 24). This incident constitutes rape. To avoid rape, personal safety must be considered; such as being assertive, being aware of the surrounding environment, and avoiding dangerous places.
