Hazing

Hazing "Hazing." Any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student or which willfully destroys or removes public or private property for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in, any organization operating under the sanction for or recognized as an organization by an institution of higher education. (Pennsylvania State Legislature). When most people hear the term hazing it conjures up images of fraternities. In reality however, hazing occurs in many arenas including fraternities and sororities, the military, athletic teams, and student organizations (like marching bands) at both high school and college levels. Most believe that hazing is in fraternities and is nothing more then silly antics and harmless pranks. Unlike what many people think, hazing is an abuse of power that can have debilitating and life-threatening consequences (Elizabeth J. Allen, Ph.D.). The major causes of hazing are the need for a sense of belonging, the school's infrequent knowledge of what occurs in it’s organizations, and the unwillingness of fraternities, athletic teams, and other organizations to change tradition.
