The undergraduate student subculture of serious academic effort is more dominant on some campuses than others and more marginal on some campuses than others. • The vocational culture mainly consists of married students, most of them working 20-40 hours per week, and there is simply not enough time or money to support the extensive play of the collegiate culture. • The rebel culture is made up of students who are deeply involved with ideas, both the ideas they encounter in the classroom and those that are current in the wider society of art, literature, and politics.
