The War Within A War The Oblivious War within a War For almost three years, various rebel movements supported by Rwanda and Uganda have conducted a devastating war versus the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Recent counts by officials studying the characteristics of a population have found that roughly two and a half million people have died in war or through war-related deficiency of food, water, and medical assistance. As a result of these military activities, the amounts of sexual crimes that occur are on steady rise. These tragic occurrences have caused various human rights organizations to investigate the atrocities that have developed. So while indeed, a larger rebellious war is being fought between the government and mutineers, a smaller, but extremely dangerous battle is being carried out: the one against women and children of all ages. Sexual brutality has been used as a weapon of war by many of the individuals involved in this struggle of eastern Congo. Soldiers and combatants of the rebel forces have committed numerous amounts of sexual crimes against young girls and women of ages ranging from five to eighty.
