Eldercare Proposed Solution to lack of Eldercare Benefits According to the article I read, Paid Family and Medical Leave: Why We Need It, How We Can Get It, each state need to (several already have) do several things to incorporate eldercare benefits for employees. One of the proposed solutions to the growing problem of eldercare issues is to extend temporary disability insurance systems, where they exist, to cover some or all types of family and medical leave. The states that are now following this solution are New Jersey, California, and New York. In addition, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Vermont have all designated general fund money (from the state’s budget) to provide income during family and medical leave. Illinois and Minnesota’s proposals require matching funds from employers. Oklahoma has a new law permitting state employees to use their sick leave to care for sick family members and the law provides a leave-sharing program in which state employees can donate their annual or sick leave to another state employee who may need it for family or medical leave.
