Certain People Change Savannah was a close friend of my family. His parents and my parents knew each other when they all lived in Cambodia. When they arrived in the United States the group decided to stay in Long Beach, California. It wasn’t the pretty side of Long Beach either; it was the gang-infested southern Long Beach. I remember my dad lecturing me in his hard Cambodian accent and broken English, “You see the big boys with blue hairnets on right there'” he asked, “They want to be mom and pa for you, they want nice for you”, he would say. “When they give you candy and tell you to give it to your neighbor to get money, you tell them that you are Rambo’s son.” Rambo is my dad nickname, those big boys with blue hair were Crips, and the candy was crack cocaine. The Crips respected my dad because he told them he killed real killers in the jungles of Vietnam everyday just so the Americans would take him to the America, therefore, he wasn’t intimidated by local punks. Above, was a quick and blunt look at how what kind of environment will impact two young kids.
