History Of The Drug Problem(nixon To Reagan)
Section 1: Discussion of the Problem
The history of drug policy began in 1969 with former U.S. president Richard Nixon. Nixon was looking for a way to decrease crime in Washington D.C. and from his perspective, drugs caused violent behavior resulting in crime. He felt that if you reduce drug use, you decrease crime. Nixon began to pinpoint the blacks, hippies and teens as the typical drug users. These were the people that the government wanted to keep off the streets. Nixon saw drug use as a moral problem. His philosophy was drugs are bad so bad people do drugs. While in office, Nixon stated that while heroin was on the rise; marijuana could be ruled as relatively safe. Nixon legalized methadone clinics for those who wanted to become clean without the bad withdrawal.
