The primary targets of Tuesday's terrorist plane attacks were two of the world's largest office buildings and nerve centers for national defense, commerce, and communication. While few Americans would consider either the World Trade Center towers or the Pentagon as national icons on the order of the Washington Monument, the buildings are high-profile edifices that have always been on security experts' short list of potential targets. The 110-story twin towers of the foot of Manhattan are the most prominent features of the New York skyline and house offices for a variety of private and government agencies, including an emergency command post for New York City. 

The center was a terror target before, in 1993, when a bomb detonated in a parking garage beneath the towers, killing six people and injuring more than 1,000. Six Islamic militants were convicted and recently sentenced to life in prison for carrying out the bombing. The World Trade Center-actually a compound of seven buildings- was publicized as "the first building of the 21st century" by developers as early as the 1960s. The Pentagon, first hastily built to house growing defense establishment during World War II, is still the world's largest office building. Although the five-sided building appears fortress-like and is made of architectural concrete, it was never intended to withstand any large-scale attack. Except in time of war or other military action, the Pentagon gets little public attention. It contains some of the nation's most sensitive secrets and is normally closed to public except through guided tours. More than 23,000 people work in the building on weekdays. The strategy of the attack on America symbolizes a strike of crippling blow on a specific branch of American society. It seems abundantly clear that the terrorists' primary goal was to destroy the economic, political, and military centers of America. 

By hijacking four commercial jets (an event which has never happened in American aviation history) which were bloated with jet fuel for cross-country flights, the terrorists planned on using them as human guided missiles. The targets were a portion of the nerve center of the American military, the home of the government, and a major symbol of American economic power. The immediate results were widespread pain and disorder. Billions of dollars were lost with the suspension of all flights by the FAA, the closing of countless businesses including the U.S. Stock Market, and demoralizing the nation. After the World Trade Center attacks, the world may be in an economic crisis. The world stood at a standstill on that dreadful Tuesday. The majority of Americans became concretely placed behind their televisions sets and it seemed that the United States was motionless. Although those bombings of September 11, 2001 have been great tragedies, we the people of the U.S. have symbolized our vast strength and courage for our country by uniting as one. The damage is understood; therefore, calling for revenge upon the people responsible for this great catastrophe upon the United States is justifiable. In addition to affecting our great nation immensely, this unfortunate act may symbolize the beginning of World War III. 

The people in the world are watching history in the making throughout this calamity. Many stories will be told about that day on September 11, 2001; however, the attacks made on America symbolize the vulnerability of life itself and the never-ending battle between war and peace.-Y
