Abortion Abortion a·bor·tion, n. 1. Termination of pregnancy and expulsion of an embryo or of a fetus that is incapable of survival. a. Any of various procedures that result in such termination and expulsion. b. Also called induced abortion. 2. The premature expulsion of a nonviable fetus from the uterus; a miscarriage. 3. Cessation of normal growth, especially of an organ or other body part, prior to full development or maturation. 4. An aborted organism. 5. Something malformed or incompletely developed; a monstrosity. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy. There are two types of abortion. The first is chemical, which is the use of a pill that is taken to induce an abortion. Some of the medications that are given are RU-486 and methotrexate. The second is a surgical abortion, which is when the doctor actually goes in and surgically removes the fetus. With in the surgical abortion there are a few different types they are: suction aspiration, dilation and curettage, dilation and evacuation, dilation and extraction also know as partial-birth abortion, salt poisoning, prostaglandins, and hysterotomy-cesarean. Some of the surgical abortions can be done in the 3rd trimester, just a reminder that there are only three trimesters during a pregnancy.
