Arson Problem Arson Problem According to the arson task force arson is the intentional setting of fires, however the Webster dictionary goes a little further in definition by calling arson, willful and malicious burning of property. Arson motives and causes can range from an inquisitive youth curious about matches, lighters, and fires, to insurance fraud, revenge and fire setting to cover another crime just to name a few. But, regardless of the manner, cause or motive the results are death and injuries to youthful fire setters and innocent people, not to mention millions of dollars in damage. Although smoking is the number one cause of home fires and death, arson is the second leading cause of home fire death and kills nearly 4,500 citizens each year. Hundreds of lives are lost each year in arson-related fires, and thousands suffer burns and other injuries as a result of these crimes. In addition, arson is very costly to our society. Some statistical facts about arson is that it is the second leading cause of death and property damage. One out of four fires or 500,000 fires that occur each year is attributed to arson.
