Shakespeare - Julius Caesar The dictionary defines a hero as a man or woman who is acknowledged for courage or deeds of gallantry. The character in Julius Caesar who best fits this description is Brutus. Brutus is the hero in this play because he demonstrates certain character features that would be necessary for a person to be called a hero. Brutus demonstrates how he loves Rome even more than himself and his friends and family. He demonstrates honesty and leadership qualities throughout the entire play. Brutus is the only true hero in the play due to the fact that the other characters in this play do not show character features to the same level as Brutus did. The killing of Caesar is a heroic deed. He kills Caesar because he knows that with Caesar becoming ruler of Rome and that later on he would become a tyrant and enslave the people of Rome. “It’s not that I love Caesar, but that I love Rome more”. The people know that Brutus loves Rome and that id why he is so popular and well respected. Cassius says, “O, he sits high in all people’s hearts” and Antony says Brutus is “The noblest man to live in this tide of times”.
