Hamlet
Comparison of Hamlet and Hedda Gabler
Tragic plays have come in many different forms over the history of drama. The art of theatrical production changes with the customs and beliefs of the time they are produced. The use of language and the time period are the most apparent variations between Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen and Hamlet by William Shakespeare. There are other discrepancies that can be compared between the two works but the one central similarity is that they are both tragedies.
Language use can determine how the play is interpreted by the audience. Hedda Gabler uses simple vernacular language so the meanings of scenes in the play do not have to be analyzed as carefully as the verses of Hamlet. Shakespeare uses very formal language that has a poetic rhythm to it. The use of language and meter in the soliloquies of Hamlet allow the audience to get a personal view of the philosophical workings of the princes mind. Interpreting the formal language of the metaphors added to the intricate plot of the play. Hedda Gablers mind was not delved into by the author to see her inner feelings and thoughts. Her personality had to be observed by her actions
