West Nile Virus For the nine weeks article I chose my article on Montgomery counties first West Nile virus case. The article talks about ways to prevent getting the virus, how very few people who contract the disease die, and it talks about the man who had the disease. I chose to write about this article because it hits very close to home and the way it has spread all over the world from originating in Africa. West Nile virus was discovered and isolated in 1937, it has been known to cause infection and fevers in humans in Africa, West Asia, and the Middle East. In 1999 and 2000, outbreaks of West Nile Virus encephalitis were reported in people living in the New York City area, New Jersey, and Connecticut. In these two years, 83 human cases of West Nile illness were reported; 9 died. In 2001, human infection with West Nile virus occurred in 10 states with 66 cases and 9 deaths. In 2002, West Nile Virus spread to even, more 44 states, with 4,156 human cases and 284 deaths. West Nile is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.
