Salt, Oil And Water
The Interaction of Salt,
Oil, and Water
Discussion
When reviewing the results obtained in this experiment, the group was able to conclude many different things. From the results, it was noted that when the two water molecules were placed on the wax paper side by side, they quickly pulled together and became one. Thus, it was evident to the group that the water molecules had gone through a cohesion process and that water is a polar molecule. The group was confident in saying this because it was known firstly, that cohesion is defined as the combination of one water molecule to another. Water can be considered a polar molecule because, a water molecule consists of weak positive charges at hydrogen and weak negative charges at oxygen. And since water has these charged areas, they are considered like the poles of a magnet making it a polar molecule.
Furthermore, because water is a polar molecule, it has the ability to attract to other water molecules and stick together. In regards to the puddles of oil, the group concluded that they merely mixed due to its slippery characteristic. As you can remember when the two oil puddles came together,
