He also worked with the government on some very important projects during World War II. His discoveries in the early 1900 still to this day influence how modern science is conducted today. Melvin Calvin was born in ST. Paul Minnesota on April 8, 1911, he was the son of Russian emigrants. He had an early fascination with chemistry and how it affected the world. This fascination with chemistry led him to attend Michigan’s college of mining and technology. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree 1931. After obtaining his degree he decided to attend the University of Minnesota to go to graduate school.
