Legg Calve Perthes Disease
Introduction
Legg Calve-Perthes disease is a deterioration of the head of the thighbone (femur) due to an insufficient blood supply to the area. Legg Calve-Perthes disease may be abbreviated as (LCPD). Some alternative names are Coxa Plana, Legg-Perthes disease, or Perthes disease. The goal of treatment is to avoid severe degenerative arthritis.
The disorder causes a flattening of the top of the femur (the ball of the head of the femur). Usually just one leg is affected. The blood flow to the femur is interrupted, and the tip of the bone dies over a period of one to three weeks. A new blood supply causes new bone cells to appear in the region over the next six to twelve months. New bone the replaces the old bone within two to three years. In cases, the capital femoral epiphysis always is involved. In 15-20% of patients with LCPD, involvement is bilateral.
Causes
The etiology remains unclear; however, the following scenario is generally accepted. The blood supply to the capital femoral epiphysis is interrupted. Bone infarction occurs, especially in the subchondral cortical bone, while articular cartilage continues to grow. The Articular cartilage
