Diabetes At age 12 I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia and quite often I am questioned about my illness and the complications associated with it. For many years life was a struggle, but most people don’t realize is the most difficult time I had was when I was diagnosed with a temporary form of type II diabetes, an allergic reaction to the chemotherapy. In my case, the diabetes went away when I was through taking a specific medication. In most situations, diabetes is a permanent and life-threatening condition often resulting in severe complications and death. As a former patient, and a future healthcare provider, diabetes is devastating. Its eradication would result in saving lives and saving our economy millions of dollars. Seventeen million Americans have diabetes. The direct results of that figure make diabetes the most costly health problems in America. While considering that costs for healthcare, you must realize that one in three diabetic people do not know it! Many people first become aware that they have diabetes when faced with complications from the disease. Patients with diabetes are more likely to develop heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, blindness, and complications in pregnancy.
