Clark, Campbell; Li, David; Conry, Julianne; Conry, Robert; Loock, Christine (2000). Structural and Functional Brain Integrity of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in Nonretarded Cases. Pediatrics 105 (5), 1096-1100.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to determine the structural and functional integrity of the brain in a sample of nonretarded individuals diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Researchers hypothesized that there is a continuum with respect to the effects of maternal alcohol consumption.
Sample:
The sample consisted of 19 subjects, all who met the diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome as defined by Sokol and Clarren. The mean age of the sample was 20.6 years (range= 16-30 years, standard deviation = 4.4 years). Twelve subjects (63.2%) were male. The mean grade level of education was grade 10 with a range of grade 6 to 12. Four subjects were in educational programs, but only 1 was of school age; 9 were unemployed, 2 worked full-time and 2 part-time; the remaining 2 females were homemakers. There was a mean IQ of 80.2 (range: 66-92, SD= 8.88). Fifteen were right handed.
The control subjects were selected from the UBC/TRIUMF PET Program data bank of normal scans. The final control sample size was 15, and the mean age was
