Ben Franklin One of the most influential writers of the Revolutionary Period was Benjamin Franklin. Franklin was responsible for many important inventions that totally changed everyday life. Franklin also wrote some of the most important works of the 18th century. In 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts, this very important person in our countrys history was born. Franklin was the tenth son of seventeen children. He did not come from a very wealthy family. His father was a poor soap and candle maker that owned who owned his own trade shop. Franklin learned how to right and read at an early age. He attended one year of formal grammar and one year under a private teacher. He ended his education at the age of twelve to learn a trade. Franklin became a printers apprentice to his older half -brother James who also owned his own trade shop. Franklin soon began to teach himself how to read and write effectively (Franklin, Benjamin. Britannica. 531). When Franklin worked for his brother he started publishing his first works. At the age of sixteen, Franklin set off on his own. Franklin left his home and went to Philadelphia. With his acquired skills as an expert printer, he soon found work and then later set up his own thriving print shop. He retired from the printing business at the age of forty-two. Along with being a self-made man, Franklin did many things that without them we would not be living in the world we do today. Benjamin Franklin was a great inventor and idealist. Among his many inventions are the reading bifocals, lightning rod, and the Franklin stove, which provides more heat with less wood than a open fire place. Franklin also did many experiments. He studied the Gulf Stream, Fossils of various creatures, and natural phenomenons like earthquakes, tornados, and lighting storms. He also did experiments and studies are in the field of electricity. Franklin will always be remembered for daringly flying his kite in a lightning storm (Franklin, Benjamin. Peco 2). Franklin made many fundamental discoveries in his many fields of study. Along with inventing many things he also helped improve everyday communities. Benjamin Franklin established many institutions. He founded the University of Pennsylvania. He established the first public library in the United States. Franklin also helped to setup a fire company, a hospital and one of the first fire insurance companies. Franklin promoted paved streets, sewers lines, and improved lighting in Philadelphia. These are just a few of Franklins many accomplishments; along with being a inventor and a innovator he was also a great statesman. Benjamin Franklin did many great things for our country. He served in a lot of different political positions through out his life. Benjamin Franklin stands tall among a small group of men we call our Founding Fathers(Franklin, Benjamin Peco 1). He served as the Deputy postmaster from 1753-1785. When he went to Europe he acted as an ambassador to the United States. He in listed the help of the France soldiers to aid the Americans in the revolutionary war against Britain while overseas. He also helped to write and sign the Declaration of Independence. After the war he was involved in the peace negotiations between Britain and America. He also signed the Treaty of Alliance, Amity, and Commerce with France, the Treaty of peace between England, France, and the United States, and the Constitution. Franklin also served as a member in the Albany Congress, the Second Continental Congress, and the Constitutional Convention. Along with being a inventor, politician, revolutionist, scientist, and statesman, Franklin was also a writer. Franklin started to write at a young age. He wrote his first works when he was working under his brother. Franklin wrote two ballads, one about Black Beard, and one on a lighthouse keeper. At the age of sixteen Franklin began to write in his brothers paper, the New England Courant, under one of his many pen names, Silence Dogood. In 1732 he used his pen name Richard Saunders to write Poor Richards Almanac. It included information on the weather, recipes, jokes, and advertisements. It also included proverbs like A rolling stone gathers no moss, A penny saved is a penny earned, and Honesty is the best policy. According to Mcmicheal, The Almanack became one of the most influential publications in American history (272). At the age of sixty-five Franklin wrote his Autobiography. Franklin wrote about his life and also gave advice on how to succeed in life. Included in the Autobiography are thirteen virtues that Franklin wrote. They are as follows: Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquillity, Chastity, and Humility. Daniel states that the Autobiography was the masterpiece of the Revolutionary Era (18). These are just some of the works Franklin wrote before his death in 1790. Many Critics believe that Benjamin Franklin wrote in a simple style. According to Stern, Franklins attitude and hard headedness showed through in his writing (341). He also stated the he was simple and lucid in his prose writing (341). Stern mentions that Franklin was one of the first folk humorists and a writer of charming witty (341). Thus, Franklin was an important writer, statesman, and inventor during the eighteenth century. Franklin is primarily remembered for his work in developing democracy in our great country. In my mind he was one of the greatest Americans that ever lived.
