Archimedes is among the greatest mathematicians of his era. He contributed tremendously in the world of mathematics. Archimedes (287-212BC), one of the finest Greek mathematician and inventers. He was born in Syracuse, Sicily and was educated at the University of Alexandra, Egypt. His greatest contributions were in geometry, on the areas of plane figures and on the areas of area and volumes of curved surfaces. Archimedes spent the major part of his life in Sicily, in and around Syracuse. Archimedes devoted his entire life to researching and experimenting instead of holding any public offices (Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2000). Archimedes with his brilliant mind saved his hometown, Syracuse, from total disaster during Punic Wars. He gave his gifts at the disposal of the state.
