Comprising of one or two dozen families, larger cities have several thousand.  The Jews are outsiders within the feudal order, therefor they have a great deal of autonomy in regulating their own affairs  Communities raised their own taxes according to what the community needed to fund-such as synagogues and cemeteries.  Crime inside the community was resolved by rabbinical courts, no police force or prisons-typically predators were banned temporarily or fined.  To follow the dietary laws of the faith the community had bathhouses and slaughterhouses so all the meals eaten in the community satisfied religious laws.  The Jews also developed large commercial operations over time, particularly in Spain (Barcelona) under Christian rule.  Held good working positions: Land tenants. Teachers, scribes, moneychangers etc.  Jewish crafts and guilds grow and their professions often associate them as lenders and with usury-creating the stereotype of the Jew as a rich tenant or lender.
