Critics Of Religion Critics of Religion Nietzsche, Marx, and Freud separately criticized religion, Christianity and belief in a God. Each argument was based on their personal beliefs about human nature and value. Nietzsche rejects Christianity because the Christian faith places value on the aspects of human nature that he argues makes human beings weak (Becker, class lecture). Marx’s criticism of religion is understandable through his critique of society in general (Solomon, 176). Sigmund Freud’s main purpose is the development of human psychological health (Becker, class lecture). Freud rejects the belief in a God because he says it is a belief routed in the psyche of an underdeveloped mind (Solomon, 179). Both Marx’s and Nietzsche’s criticisms are very valid arguments against what they are contesting. Freud’s argument is the most damaging and his argument supports what Marx and Nietzsche consider valuable. Nietzsche attacked Christianity (Nietzsche, 178). To understand his resentment towards Christianity, it is necessary to know what Nietzsche valued as opposed to what Christianity teaches people to value. Nietzsche valued the advancement of human culture (Becker, class lecture). Nietzsche believed greatness came not out of Christian virtues but in positively driving humankind forward.
