The Life Of Jesuse Of Nazareth Jesus Christ was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, in a small, overcrowded stable. Jesus was born to a virgin woman by the name of Mary and a Nazarene carpenter by the name of Joseph. Joseph and Mary had traveled to Bethlehem on horseback because “Caesar Augustus decreed that all inhabitants of the Roman Empire should be numbered, that a census should be made which could be used for effecting better taxation.” (The Mortal Career 122:7.1) All of the inns were full due to Caesar Augustus’s decree and Mary and Joseph were forced to stay in a stable that had been cleared of the animals to compensate for the overcrowding of the inns. A little more than twenty-four hours later, Mary had given birth to her baby, for whom she gave the name Jesus. In the days following Jesus’ birth, Joseph enrolled and met up with a man that he had talked with in Jericho two nights before. The man took Joseph to a friend who had a room at the inn.
