Moses Moses was the principal leader and teacher of the Israelites and one of the most important characters in the Bible. His life story is told in the Old Testament in Exodus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Moses’ parents were Israelites. One of my sources says Moses was born about 1520 BC. Another one said he was born near the end of the 1300’s. The exact date of his birth depends on the Exodus and scholars differ about when that was. Moses was descendant of Hebrew slaves who had migrated from Canaan to Egypt many years before he was born. Because there were so many Hebrews in Egypt, the pharaoh was afraid that his government could not longer control them. He ordered all of the male Hebrew children killed. One of the most well known Bible stories for children is the story of Moses and the bulrushes. His mother hid him in a basket in the rushes near the bank of the Nile River. His sister, Miriam, watched as the pharaoh’s daughter found him. She offered to go get a Hebrew lady raise the baby.
