Macumba Macumba is a mixture of Catholic and African religion developed among slaves and their descendants. Macumba is really popular amongst the inhabitants of the lower class of urban ghettos of Brazil. Christianity sees and understands this religion as trafficking in the forces of evil. Macumba is a polytheistic religion and a belief in various different kinds of spirits. This religion is related to many dimensions mentioned in the study of Religion. Three main ones of them are: mysticism, religious experience and ritual. Firstly, mysticism is a concerted effort on the part of homoreligiosus to put him/her in touch, in connection, in harmony, with a spiritual realm of existence. This effort takes the form of practicing certain spiritual disciplines that are designed to inure the body, to alter consciousness, and to liberate the human soul. People practicing the religion of Macumba communicate with the spirits through offerings, sacrifices, and possession trance. These people are subjected to religious prophecies that gear towards their body to receive the spirits.
