Dead Sea Scrolls/Essenes People In 1947 two Bedouin shepherds in search of a sheep lost from the herd came across large pottery jars inside the caves along the Dead Sea. Inside the large jars were ancient scrolls dating from 150 b.c.e. to 70 a.c.e. which is within the time of Jesus. During the next nine years scholars found more than 15,000 fragments of manuscripts and an estimated 870 separate scrolls. The scrolls were written with a carbon-based ink mostly on animal skins and papyrus although one was written on copper. The copper scroll is more of a treasure map than any sort of scriptural testament. The copper scroll lists more than sixty hiding places throughout Israel that are supposed to contain silver, gold and other manuscripts. The scrolls later deemed the Dead Sea Scrolls contain prophecies by Jeremiah, Daniel and Ezekiel that are not found in the Bible; nineteen copies of the Book of Isaiah, twenty five copies of Deuteronomy and thirty copies of Psalms. Furthermore, every book of the Old Testament with the exception of Esther is found within the Scrolls.
