Bible As Literature Point number two of the class is the fact that the Bible is showing rather than telling. This is an extremely important theme throughout the Bible. One significant example of this is in Genesis and the story of Abraham. The story of Abraham is a narrative. Most of the Bible is written in this form. Eighty percent of the Bible is story, such as the narrative of Abraham. Only about twenty percent of the Bible is sermon or law in the form of prepositional writing. In Genesis, the writer explains to the audience about the life of Abraham by using sparse but telling language to give an account of Abraham’s life. One of the predominant showing versus telling stories would be in the explanation of Abraham’s theophany. This occurs in Genesis 15:1-21 when God appears to Abraham in a vision at night. The passage states that the Lord said to Abraham “Fear not Abram, I am your shield. Your reward shall be very great” (15:1). The lord goes on to tell Abraham the he shouldn’t worry because he will have many heirs.
