American Minutemen During the Revolutionary War the militia played a major role in the out come. Some people think that the militia hindered more than helped during the war. In this essay I will describe the hardships the Militia faced, how they became organized and why I believe that they helped during the war. The governments of the colonies created the Militia system so there could be an organized form of armed forces. The militia was referred to as minutemen because they were expected to be ready to answer the call on a minutes notice. During the time of the American Revolutionary War the militia was not a voluntary force you had to belong to it if you were a free white male. If you had to serve in a battle not everyone had to go most of the people who did go fight in the war for the militia were volunteers who used there own weapons and ammunition. Locally elected leaders who were in turn commanded by the new American Government commanded these units. At times during the war people who volunteered in the militia were then drafted into the nation’s army. Most of the men who were in the militia were only trained for 2-4 days leading to very immature instincts on the battlefield. When the Officers of the militia were paid they would pool all the money into a common stock and the officers and recruits would share it equally.

Once in awhile though some officers would not hesitate to cheat the government by drawing more money than they had men so they would be able to pocket some of the money for themselves. The government put many rules on the militia over the years. Some of the rules are very clear in the Bill of Rights. Amendment number two says “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” and amendment number three says “No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law. ” These amendments to the constitution are very important in it shows that government can not take away the rights of the militia so they can go about the duties that they need to do and at the same time giving rules that the militia can’t take way rights of the people who own property. The Militia Act of 1792 originally made it so that the men that belonged to the militia had to purchase and maintain there own weapons. The government could not supply the weapons that would be needed because there would be to many to men to arm. Another reason that the government did this was to limit the spending of the army at that time. This law really upset a lot of militiamen because it forced them to buy expensive military weapons that they could not afford.

In New Hampshire militiamen had to equip himself with a knapsack, flintlock, a hatchet, one pound of powder and twenty bullets. Doing this was very difficult for many men. Many people who disagreed with this law thought maybe there should be a property tax that could be set in place so the money taken from that would be used to help purchase weapons for the local militiamen. Eventually the government started to purchase weapons and distribute them to the states equally. The Uniform Militia Act of 1792 also stated new rules on enrolment into the militia. It stated that “That each and every free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective states, resident therein, who is or shall be of the age of 18 years, and under the age of 45 years (except as is herein after excepted) shall respectively be enrolled in the militia by the captain or commanding officer of the company, within whose bounds such citizens shall reside, and that within 12 months of the passing of this act ” This part of the act states that anyone who is at least 18 years old and is male is able to be in the militia. Once in the militia these men had to with in six months provide themselves a good musket, a sufficient bayonet and belt, two spare flints, and a knapsack. The men should be armed and ready to be called for an exercise. In the Militia Act of 1792 there were many rules on how the militia would be arranged in ranks. In Section 3 it states “Within one year after the passing of this act, the militia of the respective states shall be arranged into divisions, brigades, regiments, battalions, and companies, and each division, brigade, and regiments, shall be numbered at the formation thereof, and a record made of such numbers in the adjutant-general's office in the state; and when in the field, or in service in the state, each division, brigade, and regiments shall, respectively, take rank according to their numbers, reckoning the first or lowest number highest in rank. That, if the same were convenient, each brigade shall consist of four regiments; each regiment of two battalions; each battalion of five companies; each company of Sixty-four privates. That the said militia shall be officered by the respective states, as follows: To each division, one major-general and two aides-de-camp, with the rank of major; to each brigade, one brigadier-general, with one brigade-inspector, to serve also as brigade-major, with the rank of a major; to each regiment, one lieutenant-colonel commandant; and to each battalion, one major; to each company, one captain, one lieutenant, one ensign, four sergeants, four corporals, one drummer, and one fifer or bugler. That there shall be a regimental staff, to consist of one adjutant and one quartermaster, to rank as lieutenants; one paymaster; one surgeon, and one surgeon's mate; one sergeant-major; one drum-major, and one fife-major... ” With all of the divisions stated it was very easy to see that the government wanted a very organized militia movement if needed. It’s a good thing that the government wanted all the divisions that is placed on the militia. It organized this voluntary movement so it would be affective during a war or battle. With out many of these people in the militia group it would not be able to function properly.

There were some authorities that did not really like the Militia because of the way they were commanded such as George Washington. He thought the militia was ill disciplined, poorly trained, rarely available, and frequently expressed tardiness on many occasions. Washington was not the only one with this opinion towards the militia most of the British during the war thought that the militia was a joke because they were not readily armed and trained for battle. After all of the rules were passed for militia movements, it was possible for the groups to get money from the government. The government saw that it was difficult for them to raise money during a time when they were not needed. These groups were around in case the government needed them to break up a riot or be trained to help in a major battle. Militia faced horrible conditions and basically had to give everything they had just to belong. For all of this they were poorly trained and had very little help from the new government. Despite the little or no training and the weapons being bad many people were motivated to join the militia just because they were protecting their homes and country. Even though they were poorly trained they were able to help defeat the British because of the sprit they had inside of them to help and protect their new independence. With that sprit in them helped them achieve victory in the revolutionary war.
