Sonny goes on to tell Calagero that both are necessary to keep control, and also that he treats his men well. One thing Sonny does point out, however, is that he doesn’t treat his men too well or else they wouldn’t need him anymore.

Both of these ideas must have been sparked by Al Capone’s control of Chicago during the roaring twenties. Capone was not only labeled “Public Enemy #1” by the press, but also somewhat of an American Hero by the average Chicago citizen. “I give the public what the public wants” Capone once told a reporter. This may have been true in some sense, but using the word “give” doesn’t give the true essence of what this man did to society. For a person to be considered a true hero they must, by definition, display four main personality traits: strength of character, integrity, selflessness, and an unfaltering courage.

Now I’m sure that you could twist each of these around until you could easily relate them to what Capone did, but the fact of the matter is he wasn’t an American Hero. He was nothing more than a mob boss who broke the law, corrupted city officials and turned “The Windy City” into “Sin City”. Furthermore, the truth is he never helped the public, he merely took their money and used a small percentage of it to open up things such as soup kitchens just to make it look like he was helping them.

Capone was born in 1899 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the fourth of nine children born to Gabriele and Teresina Capone, and the first of them to be both born and conceived in the United States. There was nothing out of ordinary in the Capone household. Gabriele was a barber, working normal hours and spending time with his children when not at work. Teresina, besides taking care of her nine children, did some sewing work for extra income needed by this large immigrant family. Nothing in Capone’s childhood can be blamed for the violent career he had ahead of him, no physical abuse, nothing of the sort.

He attended school with all the other children of the neighborhood, at P.S. 7, and this is were his violent outbreaks began. In these days the teachers were primarily sixteen to twenty years and were usually trained by the nuns to use strict discipline and even physical punishment. Al handled his early years quite well and carried a B average through the sixth grade.He dropped out of school the following year after a physical confrontation with a teacher resulted in a beating by the schools principle. At about the same time as his exit of the school system, his family moved to a new neighborhood on Garfield Place. It’s here where Capone first became acquainted with Johnny Torrio, a person who would alter Al’s life forever. At the time Torrio was running The James Street Gang, a group of tough teens who acted as somewhat of a feeder program for the larger Five Points Gang.

It was easy for Torrio to recruit teens into his gang because very few schools in the area had the funding or attractions to keep kids off the streets after school, or during the school day for that matter. The kid’s in the gang all looked up to Torrio as a leader and someone they wanted to model themselves after. Capone earned most of his money by running errands for Torrio and eventually Al earned his trust. Torrio took young Al under his wing and taught him the in’s and out’s of being the head of such an organization. Torrio was one of the first gangsters to view his work in a corporate fashion, using organizational skills and administrational work to out-duel your normal (and more primitive) brawling, killing type of gangs. Still under Torrio’s careful eye, Capone stayed clear of any real trouble. It wasn’t until one of Torrio’s associates (Frankie Yale) opened a bar nearby that Capone started to push the limits of the law. At the time of the opening of the Harvard Inn Al Capone was eighteen years old and was ready to take on the responsibility of becoming an independent young man.

Upon the recommendation of Torrio, Yale hired Capone to be his “utility man”. This title covered all areas of business within the establishments, bartending, bouncing, waiting tables and even some forms of entertainment. It’s at this point in his life when Capone earned his “Scarface” nickname. Contrary to stories of war fighting as a member of the “Lost Batallion” in France, the three scars on his left cheek were actually result of a scuffle with Frank Gallucio after Al insulted his sister one night in front of the Harvard Inn. This created Capone’s first meeting with who would turn out to be another one of his main business partners, Lucky Luciano. Since Gallucio was a member of Luciano’s clan, Lucky went to Frankie Yale after hearing what had happened. Since Luciano heard nothing but good things about Capone from Yale, the only punishment he received was that he had to apologize at a meeting between the four of them (Capone, Gallucio, Luciano, Yale).

For a short time after this Al had changed his ways and enagaged in a legitimate career. He had to get out of crime because he met a beautiful young girl by the name of Mae Coughlin, a pretty, young Irish girl from a normal middle class family that didn’t approve of Al’s activities. He really liked Mae and knew that she was right for him, they had a son Albert Francis on December 4, 1918, and married soon after. At the time Capone knew that he must get away from a life of crime so he moved his family to Baltimore where he worked as a bookkeeper for Peter Aiello’s construction firm. Just as the Capone family was settling down into their new life Al’s father, at the age of forty-five passed away suddenly of heart disease.

This event marked a turning point in his life, he left the bookkeeping job and renewed his relationship with Torrio, who by now had moved to Chicago to assist his uncle and current head man Jim Collisimo. Torrio urged Capone to come out west with him because he had big plans for the future in the relatively unheralded streets of this city. Chicago had something most cities out east did not, opportunity to take control. While New York and New Jersey were under strict control, with a long line of people waiting to take their turn at the top, Chicago’s crime scene was somewhat young. At the top of the list was Collisimo and his wife Victoria Moresco. Collisimo was known primarily as a pimp, but had a few nightclubs that brought in a great deal of money. Soon after Capone’s move to Chicago, Collisimo divorced his wife, who was the second most powerful figure in Chicago’s crime scene, and married one of the young girls that sang at his main club, The Callisimo Café. Seeing that Callisimo was in a vulnerable state, Torrio called in Frankie Yale from New York to take care of his uncle . . . for good. After the smoke cleared, Torrio had gained sole control to Collisimo’s fifty thousand dollar a month (Bardsley, 1998) operation.

Capone, just in from Baltimore, was the first person Torrio turned to as a headman to run his operations. After awhile their relationship became more and more equal, and finally reached the point where they were considered partners. During this period Al met who would turn out to be his best and most trusted friend, Jack Guzik. Guzik came from a Jewish Orthodox family that was oddly enough involved heavily in prostitution. The fact that this Italian mobster had married an Irish woman and would confide in a Jew helped him strengthen his respectability throughout other minority groups. When Capone first arrived in Chicago the extremely corrupt Mayor “Big Bill” Thompson was in office and he made it very easy for the criminals in town to go about their business. Thompson had a simple motto, if you’re making money, give me some and I’ll ignore your business. Capone, however, had new problems as William E. Dever came into office in the following years. Dever would not allow the same things Thompson had, and this meant that Al must find a new base for his activities. After talking it over with Torrio, Capone shifted the operation over to the small west suburb of Cicero. For a fraction of the price it cost to control the police in Chicago, Capone could purchase the entire city. This is when Al really came into his own as a leader of the crime world. Since Torrio had Capone to watch over their investments, he had time to go off on his own for awhile and take care of his mother, whom he would eventually bring back to Italy. Capone wanted complete control of Cicero, he wanted to turn it into his playground. He started this project by first bringing in the people he trusted most, his own blood, brothers Frank and Ralphie. Frank would be in charge of all governmental issues, including political campaigns and payoffs of the already corrupt police force. Ralph would manage some of the local working class bars being Cicero was mostly populated by blue-collar workers.

Within months of Capone’s control of Cicero, his brother Frank was shot by Chicago Policemen as he walked down the street during the political elections of 1924. Capone was not only hurt by this tragedy, but he was also outraged. The only thing that kept him from retaliating was the bad press that it would bring to not only him, but his family as well. That’s all Capone really wanted in life, to be a respectable family man, but by this point there was no getting out, he was “Public Enemy #1”. Throughout most of these events Johnny Torrio had let Capone do his own thing and go about his business without much objection. Torrio was the type of guy that enjoyed being liked by everyone, and by doing so he tried to trust most people. In the case on Dion O’Bannion trust was his downfall. O’Bannion, who had been somewhat of a menace to the Torrio-Capone gang ever since it began, offered to sell out his business to Torrio and move out to Colorado. Dion knew that the brewery was going to be raided the day he scheduled his closing meeting with Torrio, so upon Johnny’s arrival he was greeted by a group of cops who arrested him for violation of prohibition laws. After Torrio was thrown in jail O’Bannion was going around town bragging to people how he had tricked the witty Italian boss. In proper gang etiquette it is alright to trick opposing gangs into trouble, but talking about it afterwards to others is considered a no-no. Capone ordered Frankie Yale from New York, along with his close friends from the Unione Sicilana (John Scalise and Albert Anselmi) to go into O’Bannion’s flower shop and kill him. On November 10, 1924 three men came into Dion’s shop and just as O’Bannion reached his hand out to shake hands he was knocked off balance and shot six times, killing him instantly. This was another big step in the creation of the Capone Empire. By ridding the city of O’Bannion, Capone and Torriocould take control of his valuable bootlegging territory as well as getting rid of an enemy who was always lurking at the back of their minds. This victory did create new problems, however, because O’Bannion associates Hymie Weiss and Bugs Moran were highly angered by the killing of their long-time friend.

As it turned out Torrio would flee the city for awhile and go down to Arkansas assuming that everything would cool down and things would be back to normal once he returned. Capone, however, stuck to his guns, and while taking extreme security measures he survived an estimated dozen attempts on his life by the two. The attempts Capone made to keep himself safe were highly apparent. He always had at least two bodyguards flanking him, and when in his car (which was the only transportation he used) he would be sandwiched in by two cars.（论文代写）
