Imagery, metaphor, and form assist in a deeper understanding of the whole experience. Imagery plays a major role in the depiction of the author’s experience. It also heightens the impact that the poem Blackberry-Picking will have on the reader. Seamus Heaney does that by referring to things that call attention to the reader’s senses. “At first, just one, a glossy purple clot among others, red, green, hard as a knot.” Line 3-4. In these two verses of this stanza he refer to the readers sense of touch and sight. This creates a greater sense of verisimilitude, while showing physical intensity by illustrating the stages of ripeness through color and texture of the berries. Heaney’s description of his own behavior in seeking the berries stipulates that his cravings are uncontrollable.
