A Discussion Of General Systems Theory The systems theory that was created by Ludwig von Bertalanffy in the 1930s is the best theory to which I have been exposed in this class. This theory presents the general idea that a system is made up of many parts, all with different functions. All parts of the system are interrelated and they work together in synergy. The parts alone cannot accomplish what the entire system can. Bertalanffy also indicates that these parts must efficiently communicate. It was equally important to Bertalanffy that other theories be cultivated from his general systems theory. Because it is general in nature, the theory is not only useful in the study of mass communications and public relations, but it can also be applied to everyday life. Based on my research, I have found numerous criteria for what makes a good theory. A good theory should not only have practical use, but also conjectural value. The general systems theory creates new perspectives on the way people and societies operate, thus the possibility for improvement is enhanced.
