Philosophical Entities Chapter 10A: Teaching students with autism This chapter discussed the common aspects of autism and how to deal with children with this disorder in classrooms. Basic concepts about Autism: -Pervasive developmental disorder -affects social interaction -no single definition -not separate category in IDEA until 1990 Defining Autism: -IDEA says autism is a developmental disability that: -results in deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction -is evidenced in children before three years of age -affects child’s education performance -The Autism Society of America, the primary parent advocacy group, says autism is: -a neurological disease that affects the functions of the brain that makes it difficult for the child to communicate and participate in leisure activities -a disease that appears in the first three years of life -a disease that appears in 1 of 500 children born -4x prevalent in boys than girls -a disease that knows no social, racial, or ethical boundaries -hard to relate to others Identify Children with Autism: -just as autism is hard to define, children with the disorder are hard to identify -problems can occur in the identifying of a child with autism -children display the same types of characteristics as with other disorders such as speech and language problems -they exhibit disorders across multiple domains so they are looked at as having multiple disabilities Causes of Autism: -no single children, autism, child, characteristics, disorder, disease, strategies, positive, behaviors, self, years, verbal, three, teacher, syndrome, students, social, single, relate, present, others, multiple, makes, language, identify, hard, display, disorders, dealing, child’s, because, autistic, areas, appears
