Russian Philosophy Extending somewhat the scope of my original abstract, I would like to broach this very question: what is the position of the intelligentsia after ten years' As this is a complex and multi-faceted question, I will only offer a few hypotheses, somewhat localized, based on Sedakova’s essay. First I would like to contextualize my own interest in and understanding of this question; then I will show how the question forms part of the textual environment in Our Position and in Sedakova’s essay. I will then consider the literary theory of Mikhail Epstein in relation to Sedakova’s work, and finally present a hypothesis of how Sedakova departs from the traditional role of the intelligentsia and articulates an alternative along the lines of Epstein’s tasks of postmodernism. A phenomenon which makes concrete for me the difference between the Russian cultural situation at the beginning and end of the nineties is the difference in two collections of essays which I bought to inform my teaching of introductory courses to Russian culture.
