The election of 1968 was an extremely controversial election. The entire country was divided between whether or not the United States should be involved in Vietnam. Lyndon B. Johnson was the president who decided to enter into war with Vietnam in 1968, before he was to leave office. He decided not to run for reelection the following term so many people were contemplating running for the office. One noticeable name that nominated himself to run for election in the Democratic Party was Robert Kennedy. The brother of the late president John F. Kennedy, he was well liked by the majority of politicians and by the people of the United States. His views toward the war were that the United States had no reason to be in Vietnam fighting in the war and losing innocent lives. His anti-war views were not uncommon in those times because not many people knew what they were really doing in Vietnam.
Another candidate for the presidency in the Democratic Party was Eugene McCarthy. Eugene McCarthy was most known for being the Senator of Minnesota. In 1967, McCarthy decided to drop out of the senate and attempt to run for the Democratic nomination in 1968 for presidency, only after hearing that other anti-war politicians had declined to run, such as Robert F. Kennedy. McCarthy did not believe he would be able to win but he announced his candidacy in 1967. His announcement attracted the attention of many college students who have been spending most of their time picketing against this war. McCarthy had supported LBJ when he had entered the war but had had second thoughts about the decision afterwards and he believed that they would just negotiate a settlement for the war. (Clean for Gene) Kennedy and McCarthy were both anti-war. McCarthy and Kennedy challenged each other in Democratic Primaries across the country, with Kennedy only losing in Oregon. A little bit after midnight on June 5th 1968, Kennedy was on his way off stage, which took him through the kitchen. There, 22-year-old Sirhan Sirhan opened fire on Kennedy. He was hit 3 times and died less than 24 hours later. Many people say that if Kennedy were not killed, he would have won the Democratic nomination and would have most likely defeated Richard Nixon in the presidential election. (Simon) The third candidate in the Democratic Party and the candidate that eventually won the Democratic nomination was Hubert Humphrey. Hubert Humphrey was the vice president during LBJs presidency, and when LBJ announced that he would not run, Hubert Humphrey jumped right into the running and continued the same ideas from LBJs presidency. After Kennedys loss in Oregon to McCarthy, Humphrey knew that he had the nomination all set. (An American Presidency) The convention was split between the Vietnam war and after Humphrey won the nomination, violence and bloodshed broke out outside the Chicago convention hall between anti-war protesters and the police. (Houghton) The Republican nomination was given to Richard Nixon. People called 1968 the year of the New Nixon. Nixon won the nomination with ease.
His points were directed at the unrest and violence in the major cities and the war in Vietnam. He would use media to put out his ideas and such about change from LBJs way of running the country. Nixon had his own ideas of how to deal with the war in Vietnam. He heard about LBJ wanting to halt the bombing so that South Vietnam could join peace talks in Paris. Nixon thought that this plan might cause problems with his plans for Vietnam if he were to win the election, so he set up a secret line between himself and President Thieu of South Vietnam. Nixon would send messages through a few people, which would end up getting to the president. He told the president that the Nixon administration would have a better solution to the war than the Johnson or Humphrey administration would. (Simon) The mystery man of the election of 1968 was George Wallace. Wallace was the governor of Alabama when he decided to run as a third party candidate. He became well known for his role in the desegregation incident at the University of Alabama in 1962. His candidacy put in a lot of uncertainty into the campaign.
The Democrats worried that he would attract normally reliable voters in the southern states. The Republicans feared that he would attract the conservative voters that would otherwise go for Nixon. (Simon) The main problem that the candidates would talk about was the war in Vietnam. McCarthy got many of the younger, college voters because of his strong stance against the war in Vietnam. Almost all of the candidates were against the war but they had different ideas about how to end the war. Humphrey was following LBJs plan for a total halt to bombing over there. Nixon was into a peaceful end by talking to the president of Vietnam and the other parties. It was a matter of which candidate the people would go for. -X
