Catholic Church In the sixteenth century, the Catholic Church was protested. This protest of the church is called the protestant reformation. The Protestant reformation can be defined as the beginning of a new religious outlook. The Renaissance sparked the beginning of the reformation by revitlizing European intellectual life. This also got rid of midievil obsession with theology. The Protestant reformation started in1517 by Martin Luther. This rebellion was started when Luther became outraged at the selling of Indulgences. He wrote a document stating ninety-five thesis against the selling of indulgences. This actually started the Protestant reformation. After a public debate in 1519, Luther decides to break away from catholicism and begin his own religion called lutheranism. Luther believed that all you needed was a simple faith in god to go to heaven.
