Buddhist Belief On Suffering At some point in life, every inhabitant of our world will have experienced the feeling of suffering. Suffering can take many forms from stress all the way to being homeless and trying to find a scrap of food to maintain survival. There are many different religious theories that make an attempt at an answer to the question: Why do we suffer' In turn, everybody has a unique answer to the question. In the article, Second Truth: Why do we suffer' Ignorance, Hate, Fear, Greed, and Delusion from the Matrix of Philosophy (4.1.09), Courtney Schlosser gives a brief but in depth answer to the question from the Buddhist point of view. A Buddhist is one who follows the teachings of Buddha that life is permeated with suffering caused by desire, that suffering ceases when desire ceases, and that enlightenment obtained through right conduct, wisdom, and meditation releases one from desire, suffering, and rebirth. “Suffering comes from our selfish craving (tanha) for mentally, emotionally, and physically formed objects, and the experiences surrounding their specific energy fields.” (4.1.09) Human beings are selfish and most of us are brought up on the belief that we must help ourselves before we help others.
