Aeschylus The Father of Tragedy Aeschylus was born in Eleusis in 525 BC. He had a vision when he was young of the god, Dionysus, who ordered him to write tragedies. This is exactly what Aeschylus did and became known as the Father of Tragedy. About ninety plays were written by him but only seven survived. One of the seven surviving plays is called Seven Against Thebes. In this play Aeschylus suggests that the true cause of wickedness is ambition, greed and lack of moral fortitude. Which eliminated using the gods as an excuse for wickedness. Unlike Socrates, Aeschylus demanded that man take responsibility for their actions.
