Create A Myth The Four Functions of Mythology and The Creation of Pom Mythology is a collection of traditional stories that express the beliefs or values of a group of people. Myths often tell the story of ancestors, supernatural beings, heroes, gods, or goddesses with special powers. Sometimes myths try to describe aspects of customs or explain natural events such as the sun or lightning. These stories sometimes contain mythical characters such as mermaids, unicorns, or dragons. All cultures have some type of myths. “The stories that collectively make up a cultures mythology express its answers to the questions of why the world works as it does and what purpose human existence has” (The Study of Story). A mythologist by the name of Joseph Campbell set forth many of the basic concepts of myths allowing us to interpret them beyond their apparent story line. Campbell said that there are four basic functions which all mythological structures serve in any community, in any place, in any time. (The Study of Story) The four functions of mythology are; the mystical function, cosmological function, sociological function, and the psychological function.
