Beowulf

Beowulf In the epic Beowulf, the arms and armor play a significant role in protecting the warriors and as a token of appreciation. The weapons in Beowulf reflect the dual needs of defense and the desire to inflict serious damage. In this paper I will discuss in detail the weapons used and the armor that protected the brave men. The first piece to discuss is the mention of the sword. Beowulf mentions that during the swim, each one of the men held a sword while swimming and used it for protection against the whale beasts (Norton 43). Taking a closer look at the sword, it was one of the most common weapons during this time. It was also extremely deadly to whomever it came into contact with (Allen, 2/25/03). The swords were designed for different uses. Some were designed to be used in two hands and some were designed to pierce and cut. In Beowulf there was a lot of piercing. For instance, during the hunt with Grendal’s mom, Beowulf swung his arm and the decorated blade came down ringing and singing on her head (Norton, 65).
