Rhythmic Organization Of Petrouchka, 3rd Tableau The third Tableau of Petrushka takes place in the room of the Moor and involves all three major characters Petrushka, The Ballerina, and The Moor. In the beginning of the scene, The Moor is alone on stage. He is later joined by The Ballerina and they partake in a playful romp portrayed through dance. At the end of the third Tableau, Petrushka bursts into the room desiring The Ballerina and infuriating The Moor who chases him out. Stravinsky’s rhythmic organization in this tableau is most evident in two ways. He associates certain types of rhythms with each of the specific characters and he uses rhythm to mark events and further advance the storyline. The Moor is a masculine brutish character whose vanity and strength are portrayed by his lofty movements on stage. His legs always open much beyond a shoulder’s width forcing him to take large steps enhancing his dominating stage presence. His bold masculine charms are appreciated by The Ballerina who succumbs to his wooing in the third Tableau. We notice rhythms in connection with characters in the opening of the tableau.
