Die Fldermaus Die Fledermaus It was my anniversary the day before this performance so I decided to tell my wife we were going to the Opera for our anniversary. Needless to say, she was ecstatic. This picturesque play provided insight to the way an opera function. As the piece began, some old tunes I had heard before seemed to arise as if to set the stage for the play. The story is one of betrayal, love, and ultimately humor. It centers around a retaliatory prank on Gabriel by his “friend” Dr. Blind. Eisenstein is in essence framed to hit on his on wife during a ball without him knowing that it was actually his wife. This sets up a couple of wonderfully hilarious scenes. The first is that of a “sad” group. One is Gabriel, who is supposedly off to jail but instead will be attending the ball set up by Dr. Blind. The second is his wife Rosalinda, who is supposedly sad that her husband is going to jail. In reality, she is expecting Alfred, an old flame, to visit her during her husband absence. And finally Adele, the Eisensteins maid, is saddened because she is off to see her dying aunt.
