Music education has come along way from where it started. There are many people that had an influence on this revelation of the way music is taught today. Emil Jaques-Dacroze is one of the individuals that had an enormous impact on music education.
Dalcroze was born in 1865 in Vienna, Austria. His display of musical interest led to receiving piano lessons early in his childhood. In 1875, his family moved to Geneva, where Dalcroze continued his studies. Musical and theatrical interests drew him to Paris in 1884. This is where he studied composition with Faure and drama with Talbot. Talbot was a member of the Comedie Francaise. In 1886, Dalcroze was employed as an orchestra conductor in a theatre in Algiers. This experience had a lasting effect on his later work. As a conductor, he gained insight into relationship between music and physical gesture. As a composer, he was intrigued with the different rhythm system used in Arabic. After leaving Algiers, Dalcroze spent two years at the Academy of music in Vienna. This is where he studied harmony, counterpoint, and composition with Al Bruckner. In 1889 he returned to Paris. He studied there with Matthis Lussy, who was a musicologist who
