Borealis_Quintet

Borealis Quintet Borealis Wind Quintet I went to see the lecture-demonstration of the Borealis Wind Quintet in hopes that I would enjoy it. The five members explained that the demonstration was simply an informative session for anyone interested in their music or the next night’s performance. The gathering was extremely informal. First, the group opened with an introduction of themselves; they explained that they had been together for twenty years, ever since they met as students at Julliard. They introduced their instruments as well; Katherine Fink talked about her flute, Tamar Wells her oboe, Dan Culpepper his French horn, Wayne Hileman his bassoon, and Kathryn Taylor talked about both her clarinets, one in B-flat and another in A. She explained that the B-flat clarinet is the standard clarinet but that the A clarinet is also used in chamber and orchestral music. It was interesting listening to them talk about their instruments as well as the various reeds that they implement. Once they had become somewhat acquainted with us, the group played a few pieces of music.
