PTSD In Children Although not everyone exposed to traumatic injury will develop PTSD, others go on to develop the full-blown syndrome. Children are especially vulnerable to being diagnosed with having PTSD after sustaining a traumatic injury from more common. PTSD is extremely common in children who have sustained injuries in everyday occurrences, it could be as a result of a single traumatic event that are sudden and unexpected such as gun shots, motor vehicle accidents; 14% to 35% of children injured in motor vehicle accidents meet the criteria for PTSD (Digallo, Barton, & Parry-Jones, 1997; Devries et al., 1999; Stallard, Velleman, & Baldwin, 1998) or as a result of repeated traumatic events such as abuse (physical or sexual). The focus of the present study was to identify risk factors; age, gender, race, parental composition, and severity of injury that may predict the occurrence of PTSD in children who have sustained a traumatic injury. When such risk factors are defined, health care provides can then identify patients at an early stage that are at risk for the development of PTSD. This would reduce treatment costs and save time in treatment and management of the pediatric patient.
