To Pray Or Not To Pray To Pray or Not to Pray in Our Public Schools Voluntary prayer in public schools has been a controversial issue since the court ruling in 1963 that changed everything. In 1963, Engle vs. Vitale, this court ruling decided that prayer conducted by teachers, or a moment of silence, would interfere with the Establishment Clause. This meant there would be no more prayer in school. There have been over half a dozen court decisions against school prayer over the past fifty years (School Prayer: A Community at War: Important School Prayer Rulings, pg. 1). I believe that voluntary school prayer, or a moment of silence should be allowed. It is an injustice to deny voluntary prayer to willing students in government run public high schools. Our government still today includes religion in many of its daily ceremonies. In court, when you speak before a judge, you swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, on the Holy Bible. "In God We Trust," is written on all currency circulating in the United States. In the Beginning of all the congress meetings, the congress prays to God.
