The Ultimate Punishment, or Not
Most would say that the death penalty is the ultimate punishment. But there are a
large number of people who do not feel that way. They believe that the death is too quick
and would prefer that the guilty party spend the rest of their natural life behind bars.
There is also another portion of the public that feel that no one should be put to death,
under any circumstances, stating that the government does not have the right make the
decision to take a life, even if it is in accordance with the law.
The death penalty as a form of punishment has been around as long as man has
been around, but in wasnt until late in the twentieth century that official state penal
institutions began addressing the use of the death sentence as an official form of
sentencing. The first state-imposed execution was in Vermont in 1864. From 1864 to
around 1910 things evolved where the state was responsible for the decision to sentence a
person to death for various crimes and to carry out said executions. But as late as 1955,
four states,
