Republic
Commerce Assignment : Republican Debate
In 1901 Australia Became a federated Nation and the structure of
government was one of constitutional monarchy, with the queen as head of
state.
This Discussion Text Will Cover :
The Definition of Republic and Monarchy and will briefly outline each
for the introduction.
What changes could be made to the constitution for a republic and
some examples of the powers the head of state would hold.
The major arguments for and against the republic.
Since 1901 There has been a movement towards Australia becoming a
republic.
In the "macquarie" dictionary a republic refers to a state in which
"the supreme power resides in the body of citizens entitled to vote and
is excercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them".
In reality a republic is a system of government without a monarch(a
person that holds power by birthright).
In a Monarchy ,the head of state is a hereditary monarch who symbolises
the nation and has all constitutional and democratic authority.
Many believe this is no longer appropriate for Australia. For example
the head of state should be attained on merit not birthright and should
be an Australian citizen ,who lives in Australia and knows what it is to
be Australian.
This goal can be achieved through Australia becoming a republic. With
our own head of state
